What Equipment Do You Need to Work From Home?

Building your career while in the comfort of your home is totally possible. It all begins with finding the right home-based jobs (or a business venture) for you.

There are many companies and/or websites online that enable a person to earn money. All of which would have specific requirements and qualifications. So, if anyone is interested to apply for a position in that company, he/she should have those requirements and should possess those qualifications.

The demands would vary from one company to another but this post contains the requirements of being an online worker in general.

Since this is online, you will need the following basic equipment. I listed some of the essential things that you must have. And I would also give recommendations to give someone, especially those who are starting, a concrete example of what they can avail.

Why don't you check out this post about ways to make money online in 2019.

Here are the Most Basic Requirements for Online Jobs

1. A Personal Computer or a Laptop.

With any online job, you’d want to check out the specific equipment requirements that they have. Usually, this information can be found in the job posting itself.

I would personally recommend a laptop with at least 4GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, and an i3 processor. A brand new laptop with these specifications would cost you at least 25,000 pesos.

But if you don’t have a budget for that, here are some ways you may want to consider:

  • Borrow from your siblings or relatives. When I started working online, I used my cousins’ laptop. I remember waking up at 2 in the morning and would go in my cousin’s room just to use his laptop.
  • Buy a cheaper second-hand laptop. My first laptop was an ASUS X541U that I bought online and it cost 17,000 pesos.

2. A Stable Internet Connection

Many companies have minimum internet connectivity requirements that must be maintained to ensure the proper functionality of their programs. A subscription to a reliable, high-speed, wired internet connection is what most companies require.

I personally subscribed to PLDT Fibr Plan with up to 15 Mbps Upload and Download speed. My sister pays 1699 pesos per month with this subscription.

Again, when I started my online venture, I make use of the internet connection of my cousin’s. So you can do the same if you have someone who has an internet connection at his/her house. Well, of course, you should ask permission.

3. Headset (preferably with noise-canceling feature)

This equipment will depend on the job you have. If your job would need you to listen and talk to people (voice), then you must buy a headset.

Headsets would range from 500-6,000 pesos depending on their features. We have headsets with an external microphone, noise-canceling features, and so much more. The more features it has. the expensive it gets.

Recommendation: Check out headsets that are manufactured by Jabra and Plantronics. Any of the two would cost you more but you will surely get what you paid for.

4. Webcam

This will also depend on your job. Some online jobs such as ESL video teaching would require this but not all jobs would.

Many laptops come with built-in cameras, so all you need to do is to download video conferencing software like Skype and Google Hangouts. However, if you’re using a desktop computer or if your laptop doesn’t have a video camera, you’ll need to purchase a webcam.
